Chris Griffin’s live comedy special ‘The Mixtape,’ was recorded live to tape for an audience at the Engineered Air Theatre at Arts Common, in 2013.
The Ingredients For Success
Alex Spence was approached by producer, Donovan Deschner to shoot a live comedy special for standup comedian, Chris Griffin at the Engineered Air Theatre in Arts Commons. This comedy special was dedicated to the floods Calgary experienced earlier that year. The proceeds went to helping those effected by the floods.
The three of them met up to discussed the details. They reached an understanding on the creative, including the look and feel or tone they wanted emphasized. Later they did a location scout of the Engineered Air Theatre, in Arts Commons. The rest was planning and prepping to make sure all details were in place.
Especially for live events, planning is critical. There was a prelude introduction, before Chris hit the stage, which was important to film. It involved having Alex operating the camera handheld and being in the right place as Chris exited his dressing room. They wanted this pre-show behind the scenes introduction to help set the tone for the rest of his performance, on stage. Alex then knew where and how to reposition after Chris took to stage. For the look and feel, it was decide to keep Alex operating his camera handheld. There were two other cameras and operators on tripod, prepped and positioned in the theatre.
Ladies And Gentlemen…
On show night those discussions paid off. Decision on how to film this live comedy special helped achieve the tone both Donovan and Chris were after. The two tripod cameras offered stability and calm while Alex on handheld provided the slant that suited Chris’s comedy routine.
