Cinematography

On two separate trips, Alex captured over three months of Andrew and his team. Long days and gruelling conditions were standard but well worth the effort. Without question, Andrew and his team are absolute professionals and great company.

“I am proud to have been a part of this documentary and grateful to Andrew and his team for this experience. Congratulations Andrew, on all your hard work and success!” Alex Spence.

Being culturally different and geographically unique, it was an amazing to witness life on the other side of the globe. In total, Alex spent two months in Beijing and over a month in Inner Mongolia, China. The ancient and modern metropolis of Beijing, is an interesting and thrilling city to explore. Which was in great contrast to Inner Mongolia, with its vastness and isolating landscape. These locations juxtaposed and compared would prove to illustrate the subtext within the novel Wolf Totem. As a result, this immersive experience is one that Alex will forever treasure.

Wolves Unleashed: Against All Odds

This documentary is the second instalment of the award winning series from animal trainer Andrew Simpson. Andrew and his team navigate new territory raising several generations of Mongolian wolves for the production of the Chinese blockbuster film, Wolf Totem. As a species, Mongolian wolves are truly wild. Humans have never domesticated or trained these wolves, which is one of the themes in the novel. So Andrew is breaking new ground with these Mongolian wolves. Not only is this a human story, it is a story about these Mongolian wolves and their journey under Andrew’s care. Regardless of their efforts, a lot can happen in four yeas. Can they keep these majestic wolves and themselves safe during the making of this epic film? And will their efforts be enough to complete the film, to Oscar-winning director Jean-Jacques Annaud’s satisfaction?

Currently without a release date, Wolves Unleashed: Against All Odds is making the international film festival route. It continues to win awards and audiences alike.

Wolf Totem

The film is based on a novel by the same name. It is an autobiographical story, set during the Chinese Cultural Revolution of the 1960’s. A student from Beijing, is posted in the countryside of Inner Mongolia. There, he develops a fascination for the nomadic people and the wolves that inhabit the land.
